The 2020 IDEAS Urban Strategy Studio explored LA-ND—land ownership, development, planning, scarcity, disaster, and redevelopment—as the central story of Los Angeles. Taking inspiration from Olmsted and Bartholomew’s 1930 vision of an “emerald necklace” of parks along the LA River, the studio examined how land can shape regional identity and urban culture. Working with stakeholders ranging from community groups to real estate investors, students developed radical visions for LA’s future across three themes: embracing nature as a medium for growth, designing resilient infrastructure in the face of climate risk, and inventing new building types that maximize limited land in a city resistant to densification.
